Fear Is a Terrible Place to Stay

But it might be the best place to start with God.

I’ve been thinking a lot about obedience lately.
Not the churchy kind but the real kind.
The kind where you’re like,
“God, I don’t fully get this, but I trust You.”

If I’m honest, I didn’t start obeying God out of love.
It started with fear.

Fear of messing up my life.
Fear of going the wrong way.
Fear of missing God.

And honestly… Scripture even backs that.

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.”

Proverbs 9:10

Fear can wake you up.
But it’s not meant to raise you.

Because fear may bring you in
but love is what keeps you close.

When Obedience Becomes Love

Just like when you’re a kid.
You obey your parents because you don’t want to get punished
or lose privileges.
You don’t see the sacrifice behind the rules yet.

But as you mature, you realize…
they weren’t restricting you; they were protecting you.
They were thinking about you when you weren’t thinking about yourself.

Obedience to God is the same way.
It shifted for me from “I don’t want consequences”
to “I don’t want distance.”

Jesus said,
“Whoever has My commands and keeps them is the one who loves Me.”

John 14:21

When Obedience Looks Reckless

Obedience isn’t about proving you’re good
it’s about loving the one who already is.

And I think about when I quit my insurance job.
People genuinely thought I lost it.
To them it was risky.
but to me it was obedience.

God didn’t give them my clarity.
He gave it to me.
Obedience won’t always look wise to others before it becomes testimony.

Jesus modeled it perfectly:

“Not my will, but Yours be done.”

Matthew 26:39

Choosing Him Over Comfort

Lately obedience hasn’t been huge leaps either…
It’s been in my small quite choices.
Choosing prayer over comfort.
Letting God build me in this season instead of forcing my timing.
Realizing my choice in singleness isn’t to be in that “grind mode,”
instead, it’s God forming me, so I don’t build life without Him.

Obedience used to feel like pressure.
Now it feels like peace.
Because I don’t obey out of fear anymore…
I obey because He is faithful
and his way has never failed me!

“Perfect love drives out fear.”

1 John 4:18
